That reminds me of my friend's cats, when I was house sitting for them (I was living in South Africa at the time). While I was asleep in bed, they would catch live crickets and bite their legs off before depositing them in my shoes and slippers for me to find, in an unpleasant way, in the morning.

Why the hell would anyone bring a bear skin rug home? Some kind of weirdo? Which is probably why the cat is distressed.
