With regards to Rudy Eugene, has anyone mentioned the Z word yet? Poor homeless guy. On the long list of things he had to deal with you'd not imagine being eaten by some drugged-up d*ckhead would be one of them.

Four doors at the Four Winds Bar
Two doors locked and windows barred
One door left to take you in
The other one just mirrors it

Nodding syndrome is very sad. The headline is completely misleading though, since they're neither violent not zombies  These poor children have enough problems.

True Dotsie. I saw a rather indepth article on it on SBS a while ago. I thought they were saying it was from the river too. And no its not a "new" thing. It broke my heart when I saw the TV show. How helpless you must feel as a parent to see your children so ill.

It reminded me of my mother and father working their way around the west way back when. They figured it was best to be away from the big cities with a large family when epidemics broke out. Things WE take for granted. Still... the oldest did get polio (Dad rehabilitated her paralisis with remedies he had used on horses).

My mother came up to the school in the 60's when they were handing out the polio vaccines on the little white spoons. It was a small school in a small country town. She cooked all night and made hundreds of cupcakes for all the kids and stood at the front of the line when it was being handed out. She was so excited!!!!! :D After they got their dose whe gave them a cupcake knee keep in icing and told them to save their special little spoons to eat their cupcake. She told me years later that it felt like a mountain taken off her shoulders to know that she would never have to look for signs of polio in her children ever again. Of course we still had to deal with measles and mumps. Children died. Or went deaf, or a multitude of other complications.

I love immunisation. I love modern medicine. The health problems in Africa are a shameful blight on the world when so much could be done.

Brilliantly put! I can't understand how parents could risk not vaccinating their children. Probably because they don't remember how bad measles was.

Yep. We are in the grip of yet another whooping cough epidemic here. 35,000 cases (reported) last year and up to 24,000 already this year. My theory is... people should be dragged into hospitals to see what this does to children and babies. (and adults). They think there is a new strain here (since 2008) or that the vaccine isnt as effective. STILL.. the deaths will be drastically reduced IF people start immunising again.

Funny how things change huh? Not that long ago that measles was thought of as a given as a child. A week or two ago a case was discovered in a person in a shopping center here and the Health Authority went rabid on the news and putting out notices for anyone who had been in or near the center to get a shot.

Sorry: Immunisation is one of my soapbox things.

Love the whole irony of this one. A Sinn Fein office suffering a bomb scare

Turned out to be a fake but oddly the Shinners didn't see the funny side

I had a mate I worked with years ago. He was from Belfast and his dad owned a pretty big hardware store. When he was about 13 he and his mate decided to play a practical joke on his dad. So they wrapped an old alarm clock up in brown paper and string and put it up on a higher shelf one night. See since he worked there after school he knew that one of the customers had ordered some thing or other and would be back in to get it Saturday morning.

Saturday morning came, the customer came in with his heavily pregnant wife and the dad climbed up the ladder to get the box. When he picked it up he noticed it was ticking, screamed at everyone to get out of the building, fell off the ladder and dropped the box, the woman almost fainted and started contracting while the husband tried to drag her out of the store..... Joe and his friend almost peed themselves over the joke.... til the army turned up and secured the area. He reckoned he never went back home for week.

Love that!
The blighters tried to get me when a bomb went off in Canon Street station at the precise moment we were walking pass, on the way to work. We never even broke our stride - although it did explain why the road was cordoned off!

I'll never forgive the bar-stewards for blowing up St Ethelberga's church in Bishopsgate in 1993. The church was tiny and beautiful, and had been built in the 7th century, and rebuilt in the 15th.
Going to my school was an education in itself. Which is not to be confused with actually getting an education (Schultz)
