I wanted to be an astronaut (mid-1960s, what else would a boy want to be?). Then I wanted to be a composer, an opera singer, a farmer like my dad (until I tried it :D), a teacher (again, until I tried it  ), a professor, and finally a translator which turned out to be what I could do best.

Now I am considering the question: what do I want to be when I retire? Still Not Dead is top of the list, then maybe a grandpa. But what I am really likely to be is insanely busy doing all the things I didn't have time for while working...

Some years ago I wanted be a farmer (with Big Warm Quiet Kind Cow! ) when I retire (about 15 years after "now")! I love cows! Although always just saw they (sometimes) and never looked for them... I wanted looking after my cow, wake up with sunrise and washing she and to spend many times for my cow ... But then I knew that cow must bring some calves and these cow-children must be killed (usually), anyway  ... I understood that "little house with cow " is not for me. Dreams were broken by rude reality :(. Now I dream to translate TP book to Russian when I retire! :) It's more humanely and pleasure for my heart...
Astronaut - this is very cool! Although I am not a boy I wanted to be the same (in 70-s and later)! :)
Best regards! :)

thought about it once being a farmer I would rather run a horse riding stable and did drift over the large farms in the property pages whilst daydreaming once ;)
And in Heather's case, there were sometimes Third Thoughts and Fourth Thoughts, although these were quite difficult to manage and sometimes led her to walk into doors

Oh! Are you sure about kittens? I have 3 kittens know (2 month)! When I'll send them to new kitten's owners my heart will cry big tears! :( It's very, very hard... I love them! But 4 cats (kittens and cat-mother) on 30 square meters (my flat) - it's imposibble for our family (mainly - for my husband, of course)! :(
(Sorry, I'm in a business-trip now, without vocabulary etc...that's why I have many errors! )
PS I have British kittens, by the way :)
Best regards! :)

Oh, I went through many. Policeman, astronaut, fireman. I did want to be a scientist far more consistently. Two decades and two degrees later, I still don't have a job as a scientist, or indeed as anything.

Moral of the story: You'll never be able to fulfill your childhood dream, no matter what you try. So why bother? Life doesn't just give you lemons, it gives you lemon juice in the f***ing eyes.

Ushio: What does that do-

One of my ambitions was to have a daughter with whom would hopefully share my love of books and art and music.........bingo!!
I remember taking her to the Tate gallery in London when she was quite young, and watching her being completely awestruck - a scene I had actually imagined before she was born. It sent shivers down my spine. Our tastes are so similar it's a source of great joy to me.
Then I had a son, who is musically talented, and although he doesn't read much in general, he has a huge interest in classical history and culture.
If I was given a choice now between those kids, and going back and being that famous artist of my childhood dreams, I wouldn't even hesitate - the famous artist can go to hell :D

I wanted to be a dancer.

I have 2 left feet, no sense of rhythm and hate being the centre of attention.

In primary I wanted to become an F16 pilot: we lived close to an airbase an had those pretty planes thunder over our heads every day and I still get a bit nostalgic whenever I see them in the sky. Then I wanted to become a ballet dancer and that continued for some years, only I secretly never thought I could be good enough, and that belief of being able to is perhaps the most importent part of making it..I have allways liked history and looked up archeology on uni in norway and figured out I'll do that when I retire, since getting a job in that field is next to impossible and so I decided to study medicine, something that has always been there in the background. And I like it more for each year: complex, rewarding, terrrifying at times, challeging and interesting.. And the posibility of actually working in the field when I finish uni.
