Great photos - even the slugs and snails!
While slugs don't bother me that much, they don't quite have the same appeal to me as those beautiful bumble bees! We don't get bumble bees in Australia, except for in Tasmania where they were accidentally introduced. Much as I think they are beautiful, like most exotic species, they pose a threat to our environment http://www.aussiebee.com.au/bumblebeeharm.html All that aside, those photos are just beautiful Mycroft :)
That photo of the little red bug on the thistle is wonderful ghostsecurity28. It's great perspective and I'm always a little jealous of such great photographers!

By the way, arachnophobes like myself over here freak each other out by telling stories of huntsman spiders http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Huntsman-spider-in-hand.jpg coming down the wall at night to drink drool from the corner of your mouth when you sleep :o Which isn't half as bad as the friend who found one inside his motorbike helmet. He found it while he had the helmet on and was out on the freeway on his bike!

Thanks Aunty Vague for the compliment always appreciated :)

I have never been afraid of spiders me and my dad were the original spider catchers in our family home both my mum and my brother hated them to the point my brother stood on the couch until I caught it.

That fly is amazing in its detail Ghost! I'm afraid I didn't look too closely at the spider though.

Why does that fly remind me of Jeff Goldblum? :o

I admit I was hesitant to look at that link.... I had a house inspection today and had to go down to the area under the house where I have my laundry and an entertainment area and garage..... I had some of my daughters stuff stored down there and it got wet a while ago.... so we threw boxes open and grabbed everything that wasnt soaked to save what we could. The rest was left to sit there.... trouble is... everytime we go down to do it these HUGE FREAKING spiders come running out of it. RUN AWAY RUN AWAY!!!!!!

SO I was down there this morning and sweeping and a few HUGE spiders ran after me.... at least I thought I had the broom to defend myself until one ran UP the broom handle... RUN AWAY RUN AWAY!!!!!!

They were about three times the size of that little piddley thing in your link.

I usually vacuum them up then spray a bit of spray in the tube and seal it up with masking tape for a day or so

We had one once that was so big it wouldnt fit IN the tube of the vacuum cleaner.... but it was a bit easier to handle when I used the tube to at least chop its legs off.

Thats inside.... Had one up north once I had to chop in half with a shovel to kill.

Yes, Well, Australian spiders are very different to our British ones, we have very few that bite & none so poisonous they'll kill you if they do bite.
I think a couple can make you feel rather ill though. These are foreign invaders & not meant to be here, so those I do kill, but our own species I catch in a pot of some type & evict to the garden, whether they like it out there or not. We seem to have rather a lot in residence in the two sheds which are probably evicted from the house spiders. :D :D
Best wishes,
Tiff

While I'm still scared of spiders, I'm not as worried as I once was. Just as I know where they are and where they are is not on me :o We've had a couple of hunstmen take up residence in the house at different times this year and I've grown accustomed to them...plus they do keep down the flies and mozzies. Apart from being big and hairy they are pretty harmless.

On another topic, I keep meaning to ask the UK boardies what this is. We took the photo last year near Oban in Scotland when this little critter turned up on my daughter's shoe, but I haven't been able to find out what it is.

That's what I was going to post as well. Are you looking specifically for the type?

I think it's a noble chafer - but there are countless numbers of beetle species and, I understand it's very difficult to identify them.

If it is one then it's kind of rare. :)

Thinking a bit more about it, I suspect it's more likely to be a garden chafer. The noble chfers are not widespread and unlikely to be so far north as Oban.

I think the colouring is more like your one. :)
